July in Bohol spells out fun, celebration and friendship. Yes, it’s that time of the year (besides the fiesta month of May), wherein Boholanos find a reason to come home and reunite with families and friends for a short break and quick reunions. And why not? It’s Sandugo after all…
The Sandugo Festival is annually celebrated in Bohol (the 10th largest island in the country and one of the most visited provinces) every July. It’s a month-long celebration which commemorates the treaty of friendship between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (from Spain) and Rajah Sikatuna (native chieftain). The peace treaty took place in 1565 by means of a blood compact, otherwise known as “sandugo” or “one blood.”
The blood compact signified the friendship between the two countries (Spain and Philippines). From then, the Sandugo Festival is much celebrated in the province. Its activities include: Miss Bohol Sandugo pageant, trade fair, concerts, and the grand Mardi gras parade which is participated by contingents from the province and the neighbouring provinces.
